Rarity does not mean beauty
Even if we had unlimited funds at our disposal, does it mean buying the diamond with the rarest rating is the smartest thing to do? When it comes to purchasing a diamond one must understand the difference between rarity and beauty. Often the rarest rating might not be the most beautiful looking.
Beauty is determined by cut
For example a D color, flawless diamond with a very poor quality cut will look terrible when compared to an H color, VS2 clarity ideal cut diamond. This is because the beauty of a diamond is substantially determined by the cut of the diamond.
Based on your preferences
Another example is if two 3ct diamonds are of excellent cut and one happens to be FVS2 while the other is D Flawless and both look equally beautiful but the "D" diamond will cost more than double, which one will be more meaningful to you? If you are the value shopper, then the "F" diamond is undoubtedly the wiser choice. But if you have the means and are seeking rarity for abstract reasons, then the "D" diamond will be for you. Do keep in mind that the "F" diamond is much more liquid if you ever plan to sell the diamond in the future.
